A Few Ways to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month in Chicago, 2022

Small but mighty ways to honor Native Americans’ presence and build community this November.

Happy Native American Heritage Month! Inspiration to write this article is via Shanté Nixon, who wrote about ways to support Black business in her local community. I have written more than a few articles lamenting over BIPOC and AAPI pain. While that is part of our collective story, I need to get better at writing about our collective joy too.

So, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, I write joyfully as an ally, and a mom blessed to be part of my son’s journey as an enrolled member of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation (North Carolina). Here are a few ways to put dollars back into the Native community, help decolonize ourselves, and celebrate Native Americans’ presence and incredible contributions throughout our country. Native Americans are still here, and the community here at home for us in Chicago is thriving.
