The same law in New York, The Gender Violence Act, that acted as a catalyst and cause of action for survivor Casandra Ventura (Cassie) to sue her abuser, Sean P. Diddy Combs, is in effect in Illinois. The statute of limitations is 7 years.

The Gender Violence Act went into effect on January 1, 2004, and can be used by any person who has been victimized by sex-based violence since then. The GVA was designed to make it easier for survivors of sexual and other forms of
intimate violence to sue their perpetrators in civil court, and can be used by any survivor, whether or not they ever
filed a police report, and regardless of whether their perpetrator was ever criminally charged or prosecuted. The
statute of limitations under GVA is seven years.

My heart was on the floor when I read through these documents today. It felt too familiar, and very close to home.
Survivors like Cassie are courageous, and to be clear; this was not about a payday.
