How Did You Know?

Recalling a version of love

Photo by Andreas Haslinger on Unsplash

One night in early November, you called me very late

I can’t recall anymore exactly what time

It’s been so long that now it’s been too long

I simply don’t recall

It was at least 1am and on a school night

I often asked you how you knew

I was different

“I love this girl named Bree,” you’d say.

And that’s all that matters

But what about the girl from freshmen year of college?

I’d say.

For years this went on for. Each time we circled back

It was never the obvious question;

What about your wife, your kids’ mom?

No. In my naive and childish mind. It was

What about the only other girl you loved this much. You told me about her one night

At the beginning of our relationship

We laid in bed at a fancy hotel suite

After I took a bath.

I think it was a stand alone tub. The kind I like. One of the few times
