I (Still) Want to Be What I Said at 5 Years Old.

When someone tells you who they are, believe them. And maybe I should take my own advice.

The author as a Novice lady, interpreting “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” by Sergei Rachmaninov

When I was five years old, my mom asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. My answer?

  1. Olympic level ice skater
  2. Artist
  3. Waitress

I can explain.

  1. I loved to skate at the local pond with the two neighborhood boys who loved hockey. Fast forward 13 years and I was Olympic eligible. I skated professionally domestically and overseas until 2013. I made a brief return in 2015 and fully retired in 2018 after I was struck driving home from the rink by an uninsured motor vehiclist.
  2. See above. Or see this blog, as writing is an art form of another medium (kudos on the name of the company, Medium).
  3. I used to be fascinated with the little bowls of coffee creamers, sugar caddies, and how waitresses multi tasked keeping them filled while dealing with 10 tables full of annoying people all while carrying so many plates full of food. I also felt it was like a mini workout, I liked the idea of being on my feet and moving all day, and not having to really over think anything (no time). I waitressed, bussed tables, hosted, shift led, moonlight managed, and bartended for 10 years.
