Ah, Yes; Sharing Sweet, er, Awkward Memories of Times on the Road With a Veteran Athlete and Performance Artist
Years ago, I sat in the Pro’s room at a rink chatting with my boss. It was early in the morning, definitely before 6am. I had hardly had a chance to sip the coffee I’d brought in from home. My baby sat next to me, as I often brought him with me to lessons before dawn. At the time, he was just that; a baby. He didn’t yet speak or understand adult conversations. So, my boss and I discussed adult matters; Social Security, retirement prospects, our current line of shared and not shared students, and, one more thing we had in common — professional athletics.
My former boss had been a highly successful athlete as an eligible athlete and gone on to perform as a principal with a renowned performance troupe all over the world. I had been some version of that myself. We’d both known life on the road, signing contracts, auditioning, rejection, conditional approval of the Entertainment Industry having only recently left the critical eyes of the eligible sports world. Having lived many lonely days and nights away from close friends and family, been judged and criticized…
