What MLK Jr. Day Means To My Second Grader

Thoughts by my 7 year old son and paraphrased by his Mom (me).

Admittedly, I feel overwhelmed on the subject of Dr. King. I never feel it is appropriate for me to speak on. Similar to Malcolm X, I am moved to silence.

Therefore.

Who could say it better than spoken through the heart of a child? Without further ado.

Mom: What does MLK Day mean to you?

Son: It means we should still honor Martin Luther King even if he died. We should try to remember and honor him. He was a great speaker. He had a dream about all the people being equal and a world where White people and Black people and Asian people and Mexican people and New Mexican people [Indigenous] can go to the same school, and even homeless people can have a place to live and make some bucks.

Mom: How did you know that Martin Luther King Junior’s dream was for equality?

Son: The speech gave it away.

Mom: Ok. Thank you for sharing. I love you.
