What’s the Difference Between Me & Her?
My earliest memories of having a White accomplice. He was also my first love, heartbreak, and taught me interesting life lessons on interracial relationships.
It first happened in fourth grade. A boy in my class had a girlfriend and he developed a crush on me. The boy was popular, well liked, and very funny. He was above average looking, his family had money, and as a result, he was confident and extroverted. Also. He was White.
The following year, I was placed into the same class as this boy again. We’d been in class together in first grade, fourth grade, and now fifth. The girl was also in our class again. At some point, she dumped him, and he asked me to be his girlfriend. The following summer, he kept dating me, but started to also date the girl again. She was White, thin, blonde, upper middle class, and very popular.
That same boy and I had became very close friends after I realized this girl was the one he had endless feelings for romantically. There was something comfortable and stable with me. But for whatever reason, I instilled more confidence in him platonically than romantically.
I have very fond memories of sitting with him whenever we could throughout elementary school and into junior high. In classes we had together, in silent reading time, at all school functions and pep rally type…
